Changing Attitude, the national group working for the affirmation of
lesbian and gay people within the life of the Anglican Church, welcomes the
publication today of 'Some issues in human sexuality: A guide to the debate'.
The guide is a wide-ranging survey which addresses sexual ethics, theology,
biblical teaching and gender identity. It acknowledges honestly the widely
differing range of opinions held by Christians and expresses the hope that each
reader "will be able to reflect on which issues need to be thought about
again, and how to engage in the continuing journey of dialogue with
others". (para 9.7.7)
The Revd Colin Coward, Director of Changing Attitude, said today, "The
guide will be a useful resource in our continuing work to educate the wider
church in the experience of lesbian and gay members. It will only be truly
effective when lesbian and gay voices are heard in study groups and synod
discussions. It provides a new initiative to the process authorised by the 1998
Lambeth Conference and re-emphasised at the recent Primates' meeting, that the
church needs ‘to listen to the experience of homosexual persons, and...to
assure them that they are loved by God and that all baptised, believing and
faithful persons, regardless of sexual orientation, are full members of the Body
of Christ‘. The bishops need to ensure that the long-overdue discussion now
takes place in every parish.”
