as the Primates meet

A service of Prayer and Celebration for Lesbian, Gay & Heterosexual Anglicans

Tuesday 14 October 2003
7.30pm
St James' Piccadilly, London

On the eve of the Primates meeting on 15th and 16th October at Lambeth Palace, London, Changing Attitude held a service of prayer and celebration.

The president at the service of Holy Communion was the Revd Clare Herbert, Vicar of St Anne's Soho, London. The preacher was the Revd Colin Coward, Director of Changing Attitude, with personal testimonies from Brenda Harrison, Administrator of Changing Attitude and the Revd Rowland Jide Macaulay, poet and pastor.

The service was planned in co-operation with other members of the Human Sexuality Joint Strategy Group - LGCM, Lesbian and Gay Clergy Consultation and General Synod Human Sexuality Group, with help from St James' Piccadilly and the St James' lesbian and gay group. The purpose of the service was:
  • To pray for the Primates
  • To let them know that we are here in substantial numbers and care deeply about the outcome of their discussions
  • To celebrate the reality of lesbian and gay Christian lives
  • To encourage each other and celebrate our faith in an orthodox, mainstream, inclusive and diverse Church.

Over 250 attended, filling St James' church with prayer and enthusiasm. The congregation came from as far afield at North Yorkshire, Birmingham, Folkestone and Norwich.
