Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme

Under the revised Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme lesbians and gay men will be entitled to compensation following the death of their partner. Following the Soho nail bombing, when the partner of a gay victim was denied compensation, Stonewall had been lobbying Government to bring about this change. In a Press Release, Sebastian Sandys of Stonewall said:

'We are delighted that the Government has announced this change. Lesbians and gay men are entitled to have their relationships recognised and valued. In the event of the death of a partner the refusal to acknowledge a relationship is inhumane and has only added to grief and hardship. This is one more step along the road to full legal equality for lesbians and gay men and we warmly welcome it'.
